The International Scout II
The Scout came in in three flavors in 1979: the short-wheelbase Scout II, the full-figured Scout Traveler and its pickup adaptation, the Terra.
Scout Terra (1976-1980)
The Scout Terra was on a extended version of the standard Scout II, featuring a 118-inch wheelbase compared to the 100-inch wheelbase of the standard model, but it was geared for the pickup truck market with a removable fiberglass half-cab roof and a bulkhead to create a distinct cargo bed area ideal for hauling.
The terra was 5 feet, 8 inches wide and over 15 feet long, it approached “full size.” As a hauler, it was capable enough, with a 2,000-pound carrying capacity in its six-foot-long bed. Carrying a full sheet of plywood was a problem, though, with only 42 inches between the wheelhouses despite a gaping 54.8-inch tailgate opening. Long leaf springs helped keep the ride tolerable, with six leaves up front and four leaves in the rear providing a 6,200-pound gross vehicle weight rating.
This unique configuration made the Terra a popular choice for those seeking a capable, multi-purpose vehicle, and today it is a sought-after model among collectors of vintage IH Scouts.
